Most of you know we’re all about speaking directly to our customers and we do this in order to better prepare what products we come out with every season. We wouldn’t be here without you! We are very fortunate (and grateful) to have your valuable input on the design and details of our product. We even get extra lucky when a product comes to life straight from the horses mouth — like Gwen! She noticed a need for a particular top in the industry and after sitting down with her, picking her brain on all of the details — color, fabric, cut — alas came the Gwen Short Sleeve Performance Mock (by Gwen!). Read below for a full interview on her and more details on how she helped design the top.
A little about yourself:
I’m a 32 year old professional who works for an energy consulting firm supporting hotels throughout the country to operate more efficiently and use less electricity, gas, and water. My favorite things in life are my horse, Titan, and my pug, Hank.
How did you get your start in the horse world?
From a very young age I was obsessed with horses – my dad tells me that before I even began to talk as a toddler, I would get excited when I saw a horse trailer. Around the age of eight my parents finally started me in English riding lessons, and 24 years later there is no place I would rather be than at the barn.
What discipline do you ride?
How long have you been riding?
Since I was 8 years old.
What do you do when you’re not riding?
Work a LOT (to be able to afford my horse!), also love running and spending time with friends and family.
What is your favorite Noble Outfitters product? Why?
Shoot – I have two favorites! I LOVE the Gwen and the Peddies. The Gwen is such a soft and breathable yet sturdy material (I have washed mine dozens of times already and feels the same!), and it’s great even in the colder months for layering a sweater.
The Peddies – you just can’t beat them. They are thick where they need to be and thin where they don’t, they are the only socks I wear under my boots now.
Describe your perfect Saturday.
Saturdays are one of the only days I get to ride and spend extra quality time with my horse – and really check out of work. While we have grooms that usually tack our horses up, I like to spend most of the day out at the barn taking care of him myself. We usually have jumping lessons on Saturday, then go out on our nearby trails – it’s my favorite way to decompress on the weekends.
What is your #1 goal?
To win a 1.30m Classic with T some day! (he’s only 5, so we have a way to go ☺)
What is your biggest accomplishment?
Shoot, I really have two – putting myself through college and being the first in my family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree was pretty significant, but winning my first Speed class at the Del Mar National out of 78 horses was also big for me!
What is one thing you can’t leave the house without?
I’m pretty guilty of always having my phone – but I think my SunBum chapstick is a close second.
Favorite social media channel? Why?
Instagram – because it’s so easy to stalk top riders around the world, and get my fill of adorable pics of pigs and pugs.
How did you come up with the concept of the Gwen?
I saw a need for a great short sleeve shirt for schooling, but that still had a collar so could wear to clinics or look clean enough to school in at a show.
Where you able to see the top through from beginning (design and sketch) to end (development)?
Yep, working with the Noble team was amazing. They are so committed to getting a quality product developed that really meets needs of riders. Most of their staff also rides, so they are easy to relate to – they “get it,” and that makes the process that much more fun.
What was your favorite part of this process?
Actually getting to wear the final product!
What is your favorite part of the shirt? Colors, material, design, etc.
I absolutely love the material and the fit – it doesn’t cling to those areas that I’m trying to hide, and is wearable year round – on the hottest day it breathes better than any other shirt I own, and on cooler days it layers perfectly under sweaters or my Noble vests (which I also love!)
