Black cats, goblins, ghouls and things that go bump in the dark! Tomorrow must be Halloween. There will be lots of spooky, scary costumes haunting the streets on October 31st but we know that horses seem to find “spooky” things at any time of day, all year round! We have concluded that horses are really only afraid of two things: things that move and things that don’t!
Horses are either fascinated or petrified by baby strollers… or maybe it’s just the contents inside.
They blow in from any direction and often get caught in a bush or a tree just out of reach, but the horses know exactly where they are.
In the wind, horses believe tarps become terrifying horse-eating monsters!
Mountain lions use rocks and boulders to stalk their prey. Horse Logic: better to spook first and ask questions later!
Barn cats often appear out of no-where jumping up on ledges and on top of feed bins with no concern for the havoc they leave in their wake.
This unnatural wariness of children and their antics can easily be overcome with horse cookies and carrots.
Billowing and blowing in the wind, some horses find it best to spook just in case.
Large Black (or Blue or Green) Garbage Cans
Big, black, and scary… large roadside garbage cans smell frighteningly bad!
Leaves rustling in the wind
The human equivalent to bump in the night is rustling leaves in the wind for horses.
Even the most seasoned trail horse can take a second look at these yawning caverns of death.
Herd Mentality: If one goes running, there must be a good reason… so they all start running!
Your horse may recognize you a mile away with a bag of carrots in the summer but you won’t get within 10’ of a spooky horse in the winter with horse cookies and your rain jacket blowing!
Soda Cans (Empty, full, or being opened)
Empty, full, or being opened, these terrifying objects make very alien-like sounds to a horse.
Usually the stationary ones are the worst… they might be a horse-swallowing hole!
Practice all you want, the day arrives with the photographer and horses act as though they have never seen your billowing sail of white terror!
White Plastic Bags
Erratic movement, strange sounds, unexpected locations, these innocent white grocery bags are the ultimate in terror!
